If you are a woman of color, your skin requires additional attention. Your ethnic skin care regimen should consist of treatments that address dry, oily or acne prone skin conditions. Ethnic skin tends to be more sensitive, so making lifestyle changes are of great benefit to making ethnic skin more radiant.

Since I am an African American, I can relate to the challenges faced with achieving more radiant skin. The four lifestyle changes I’m about to share, will not only help you to achieve more radiant ethnic skin, but you will be able to see and track measurable results. The good thing is not all of these lifestyle changes have to be hard hitting. Subtle changes often yield dramatic results, so start with one of these:

Get Enough sleep – Getting the recommended 8 hours of sleep nightly reduces stress levels. Since stress causes additional oil production in the skin which encourages acne breakouts, getting enough sleep is not optional, it’s mandatory for maintaining radiant skin.

Moisturize Often – Ethnic skin tends to have a T-zone area and/or dry patches. Using the proper moisturizer is required to keep the skin properly hydrated and to deliver necessary vitamins and nutrients. Moisturize no less than twice daily – morning and night. If I had a dime for every time I encountered a young woman who doesn’t moisturize at all (and she looks like it), I would be sitting on a beach in Cancun…daily.

Eat More Vegetables – If you’re like me, you may not be very fond of vegetables but the green ones are especially important. They balance your pH levels which prevents hormonal imbalances (another acne culprit) and ultimately prevents premature skin aging.

Stop Smoking – I realize that smoking is not any easy thing to quit doing but consider this. Smoking has a number of bad effects on your health overall, increasing your risk of disease. Smoking also causes your skin to age before it’s time. Every time you smoke, you zap the necessary moisture out of your skin. It’s highly recommended that you do whatever you can to quit smoking for improved health and more radiant skin.

Ethnic skin care does not have to be a chore. Subtle, daily lifestyle changes can raise the bar on your skin care regimen. Try to implement each of these changes for optimal ethnic skin care.
